20th Century Paintings of Small Town/Rural America

With Professor Emeritus Patrick D. Anderson

***This program is sponsored by the Washington NH Historical Society***

This presentation will focus on five American artists from the 20th century who painted small town and rural life and features dozens of works by Charles Burchfield, John Steuart Curry, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton and Edward Hopper.  By examining the works of each of these artists, we will gain a greater understanding of and insight into the values they reflected and why their works were so popular with the American public during their lifetimes and have become such iconic images of the places and peoples they depicted.  Patrick will invite discussion with participants about how their sense of place in 21st Century New Hampshire compares with that reflected in the paintings.
